Tết là phải có mai! Cho nên trồng cây mai, đến Tết mà không có hoa là vô dụng, uổng phí công chăm sóc cả năm trời! Nhất là năm nay, năm nhuần, kéo dài đến 13 tháng, đa số cây mai, đến nay đều có tàn lá rất già, có cây lá đã vàng hết rất dễ rụng, mà hễ cây mai rụng lá là ra hoa trước Tết!
Để chậu mai nở đúng Tết năm nhuần, đến khoảng tháng 11 âm lịch, phải quan sát kỹ lại lá mai và nụ mai.
Có 3 trường hợp
– Thứ nhất là lá mai còn xanh, nụ mai còn nhỏ, năm nay là năm nhuần, trường hợp này ít có, chỉ có đối với cây mai đã được lảy lá trước vào giữa năm mà thôi.Nên tưới thúc thêm phân NPK loại 15 – 30 – 15 để kích thích ra hoa, pha gói 10g với 8 lít nước, mỗi tuần tưới một lần, đều hết từ ngọn đến rễ.
– Thứ hai là lá mai đã vàng, nụ mai khá to, thì có thể ra hoa sớm, trường hợp này phải tưới thêm phân bón lá, loại NPK 30 – 10 – 10, pha 1 gói 10g cho 8 lít nước, mỗi tuần tưới một lần, để dưỡng lá cho xanh trở lại, không cho lá rụng, nhằm giữ hoa không cho nở sớm.
– Thứ ba là lá mai đã già, nhưng vẫn còn xanh, nụ hoa lớn vừa, là lý tưởng, chỉ cần tưới nước bình thường sáng sớm và chiều mát, giữ cho lá mai đừng vàng úa, đợi đến ngày lảy lá, chớ không nên tưới thúc phân gì cả.

Ngày lảy lá cây mai
Gần đến rằm tháng chạp, quan sát lá mai và nụ mai lại một lần nữa:
– Thứ nhất, thấy lá mai còn xanh, nụ mai còn nhỏ, có thể sẽ nở trễ hơn Tết, nên lảy lá sớm cỡ từ 10 đến 12 tháng chạp, nghỉ tưới nước một ngày cho khô nhựa, rồi tưới thúc thêm phân NPK loại kích thích ra hoa mạnh như 6-30-30, hay 10-55-10, cũng pha 10g cho 8 lí tnước, cỡ 5 ngày tưới một lần, rồi tiếp tục tưới nước lại bình thường. Năm nay là năm nhuần trường hợp này ít có.
– Thứ hai thấy lá mai hơi vàng, nụ mai to vừa, là rất đúng, trường hợp này nên lảy lá mai vào ngày rằm tháng chạp, cũng ngưng tưới nước một ngày, rồi tiếp tục tưới nước lại bình thường, mỗi ngày một lần vào sáng sớm hoặc chiều mát, khỏi cần tưới thêm phân gì nữa.
– Thứ ba, thấy lá mai đã vàng úa sắp rơi rụng, nụ mai khá to, có thể hoa mai sẽ nở sớm trước Tết. Trường hợp này nên đợi đến cỡ ngày 20 tháng chạp hãy lảy lá, cũng ngưng tưới nước một ngày, rồi tưới thêm phân NPK 5.0.2 hoặc urê loãng, pha gấp đôi nước, 5 ngày tưới một lần, để hãm cho hoa nở trễ, mới tưới nước trở lại bình thường, mỗi ngày một lần vào sáng sớm hoặc chiều mát.
Cách lảy lá mai làm sao cho đến ngày 23 tháng chạp, đưa ông Táo về trời, mà nụ mai bung vỏ trấu vỏ lụa là đạt. Đến Tết hoa mai sẽ nở đầy cành và luân phiên nở suốt cả tuần lễ mới hết.

Trường hợp đặc biệt
– Thứ nhất là thúc cho hoa mai nở sớm, nghĩa là đến ngày 23 tháng chạp mà nụ mai chưa bung vỏ lụa, hoa mai sẽ nở trễ hơn Tết. Theo nguyên tắc: nóng thì hoa nở sớm, nên phải đem cây mai ra để ngoài nắng, không tưới nước vào sáng sớm và chiều mát, mà phải tưới nước vào giữa trưa, hoặc tưới nước ấm cỡ 30oC. Tối có thể thắp thêm một bóng đèn tròn treo cách xa để sưởi ấm.Thúc cho cây mai nở hoa sớm thì rất dễ, đến gần Tết có thể phun thêm một lần thuốc rầy, như Methyl Parathion, hay Monitor thì hoa mai sẽ nở ngay.
– Thứ hai là hãm cho hoa mai nở trễ, nghĩa là chưa đến ngày 23 tháng chạp, mà nụ mai đã bung vỏ lụa vỏ trấu rồi thì hoa mai sẽ nở sớm hơn Tết. Theo nguyên tắc: lạnh thì hoa nở chậm, muốn hãm cho mai nở chậm lại, thì phải đem cây mai vô để nơi râm mát, tưới thêm phân bón lá 5-0-2 và phân lạnh như phân urê pha loãng. Để hãm cho hoa mai nở trễ, cũng có thể lấy vải đen bao trùm cây mai lại. Nhưng thực tế, muốn làm cho cây mai ra hoa chậm lại là rất khó, còn tùy theo môi trường nơi trồng cây mai có mát mẻ hay không nữa.
